This
year the West Virginia Bar Foundation has reached significant milestones
thanks to the support of individuals like you. We’ve worked diligently to
uphold our mission of improving the administration of justice and
enhancing the legal profession in West Virginia, as well as improving the
internal management of the organization.
Highlights
of 2024:
- Continued
the Foundation's signature events: the 26th Annual Fellows Dinner at
which 17 new Fellows were inducted; Lunch with a Legal Legend
honoring WVU College of Law Professor Marjorie McDiarmid (including
donating $4,607 to her charity of choice from donations raised in
connection with the luncheon); and the Lawyer Leadership Institute
at which 11 promising young lawyers received invaluable professional
and community service leadership training.
- Funded
the Larry V. Starcher Public Service Scholarship granting a full
scholarship in the amount of $26,586 to 3L student Aryanna Islam.
- Completed
the final of three annual pledged payments of $5,000 to help fund
the Courts Learning Center under the auspices of the West Virginia
Supreme Court of Appeals.
- Granted
$5,000 to Child Protect of Mercer County, Inc., to help fund the
purchase of digital evidence software in support of child abuse and
neglect cases.
- Granted
$3,500 to Public Defender Services to aid in the development of
informational brochures for parents connected with abuse and neglect
proceedings.
- Granted
$30,000 to Child Law Services, Inc., to help fund two attorney
positions to assist in the representation of children in abuse
and neglect cases.
- Conducted
a Strategic Planning Retreat at the offices of Steptoe & Johnson
in Bridgeport, WV, for the Foundation's Board of Directors resulting
in the formulation of a five year Strategic Plan for the
organization.
- Revamped
and updated the Foundation's website and installed new software to
manage the membership database.
This
year the Foundation distributed grants totaling $75,086 in support of a
wide spectrum of qualifying entities. Cumulatively, since 1988, the
Foundation has issued $634,394 in grants.
These
accomplishments are only possible through the generosity of our
supporters and the volunteer work of the Foundation's Board of Directors
and participating Fellows. As we look ahead to another impactful year, we
